Utah's Nobel Prize-winner meets long-lost sister

Winning the highest honor in science opened some unexpected doors into Mario Capecchi's distant and elusive past, a childhood shaped by war and wandering.

Last month during a trip to his native Italy, Utah's famous geneticist tearfully walked through one of those doors to meet a half sister he never knew he had before the Nobel committee made him famous last October. Marlene Bonelli, who grew up with her adoptive parents in Austria, where she now lives, knew she had a brother but did not know he was alive until his name was splashed across headlines.
