Buy Java-logs, made from recycled coffee grounds, they burn cleaner than wood, producing less creosote (tar) and carbon monoxide.
Try cotton-blend insulated drapes which block solar heat in the summer and catch it in the winter. You can find some HERE and I have seen them at Target so am sure you can easily find these.
