i use a reel mower at the fam's- as it's a small yard. i never bag- and since we have a japanese beetle problem- i have treated both lawns with milky spore available at agway i know- and i think home depot. let dandelions grow too- they are good for the soil as they have deep tap roots that bring nutrients to the surface where the grass roots are. plus, the first batch of the season make good dandelion greens :) clover and any of the other plants most folks find noxious- help the lawn. my lawn is lovely and i don't mow more than once a week- generally as needed. the nice man next door does bag but he puts the clippings out back in a pile to use for his other plants. the other neighbor bags, yard wastes and uses tru green. he must hate me :)

One thing I love is a nice well manicured weed free lawn. Would be hard for me to give up getting the lawn treatments.
