One Hundred Sled Dogs Killed in Canada

When bookings for sled-dog tours dropped sharply following the 2010 Olympics, a Vancouver company had a simple and brutal solution to its excess capacity: kill 100 of the dogs. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police and animal-rights advocates are investigating the killings, which came to light when an employee claimed she suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder after being ordered to shoot the dogs. While some of the animals died instantly, others were at first only wounded, dying painful deaths, investigators say. One official said the killings violated laws about culling and were far worse than conditions in slaughterhouses.
