Wisconsin Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald sent a braggy fundraising letter to supporters about GOP efforts to bring down unions, saying they "ruined California and Illinois, but they're not going to ruin Wisconsin.”
"That is because Republicans faced down Big Labor's bully tactics and a Democratic walk-out in the state Senate to break the power of unions like WEAC and AFSCME once and for all," Fitzgerald said in his letter.
'Big labor's bully tactics' is clearly misleading -- hundreds of thousands of teachers and firefighters protesting to protect their families are certainly not 'Big Labor' in the same sense as, say, Wal-Mart -- which Gov. Scott Walker gave tax breaks to -- is 'Big Business.' But the assertion that Wisconsin Republicans have 'broken unions' 'once and for all' is an out and out lie, wrought no doubt by the solipsism that caused them to ignore their constituents pass the bill in the first place. In case Fitzgerald has forgotten, he is named as a defendant in a lawsuit to block the law he and his fellow Republicans voted on illegally. Yesterday, two state employees testified that he 'pushed a state agency to publish the statute after a court blocked the secretary of state from doing so,' reports Bloomberg.
