Current TV Parts Ways With Keith Olbermann
WOW! That didn't last long.
OPEN LETTER TO THE VIEWERS OF CURRENT
To the Viewers of Current:
We created Current to give voice to those Americans who refuse to rely on corporate-controlled media and are seeking an authentic progressive outlet. We are more committed to those goals today than ever before.
Current was also founded on the values of respect, openness, collegiality, and loyalty to our viewers. Unfortunately these values are no longer reflected in our relationship with Keith Olbermann and we have ended it.
We are moving ahead by honoring Current's values. Current has a fundamental obligation to deliver news programming with a progressive perspective that our viewers can count on being available daily -- especially now, during the presidential election campaign. Current exists because our audience desires the kind of perspective, insight and commentary that is not easily found elsewhere in this time of big media consolidation.
As we move toward this summer's political conventions and the general election in the fall, Current is making significant new additions to our broadcasts. We have just debuted six hours of new programming each weekday with Bill Press ("Full Court Press, at 6 am ET/3 am PT) and Stephanie Miller ("Talking Liberally," at 9 am ET/6 pm PT).
We’re very excited to announce that beginning tonight, former New York Governor Eliot Spitzer will host “Viewpoint with Eliot Spitzer,” at 8 pm ET/5 pm PT. Eliot is a veteran public servant and an astute observer of the issues of the day. He has important opinions and insights and he relishes the kind of constructive discourse that our viewers will appreciate this election year. We are confident that our viewers will be able to count on Governor Spitzer to deliver critical information on a daily basis.
All of these additions to Current's lineup are aimed at achieving one simple goal -- thegoal that has always been central to Current's mission: To tell stories no one else will tell, to speak truth to power, and to influence the conversation of democracy on behalf of those whose voice is too seldom heard. Rift Between Olbermann and Current TV Deepens: 'Everybody Is Replaceable'
It seems my TV boyfriend Keith does not do well with the 'team' concept!
Keith Olbermann returned to the airwaves Wednesday night, but the rift between the bad boy anchor and his superiors at Current TV has not dissipated a day after he refused to lead the network’s coverage of the Iowa caucus, TheWrap has learned.
The newsman has tapped high-powered lawyer Patricia Glaser to "determine his rights" in his five-year contract, an individual close to him told TheWrap.
Meanwhile, executives at Current TV said that relations – especially those with Current CEO Joel Hyatt – were at a breaking point after deteriorating over the past several months.
“I hope Keith is part of our future, but it’s up to Keith,” an executive with Current who declined to be identified told TheWrap. "Keith set us in the right direction and we’re on that path now … and as I’ve learned over the years, everybody is replaceable.”

Keith Olbermann: The 'Countdown' To His New Show
After abruptly departing MSNBC in January, Keith Olbermann returns to broadcasting on June 20 with a new version of Countdown on the Current TV network.
He tells Fresh Air's Terry Gross that his new show resembles his old show on MSNBC but "with some additional bells and whistles and a little bit more commentary." And, he says, he's looking forward to being at a network where he can say things he wasn't able to say before.
"This is not specific to NBC or MSNBC, but I just saw an environment growing in which there were more and more conflicts of interest within these large national corporations where no matter what you said, you had the potential to affect some other part of the big company's business," Olbermann explains. "The more that that's true, the less they want you to say. Even if there is no explicit attempt to censure or to proscribe or otherwise to interfere, there becomes an issue of the larger the corporation, the more fear in the part of the people involved in its production."

Keith Olbermann's Countdown Returns to TV
MSNBC's former liberal crusader Keith Olbermann is set to make a Countdown comeback, this time on Current TV. The network has announced it will premiere the new Countdown with Keith Olbermann on June 20. Current TV's co-founder and Executive Vice Chairman Joel Hyatt said the show "will showcase the return to television of one of America's most gifted thinkers and communicators." Current's CEO Mark Rosenthal added that the new Countdown will combine features of Olbermann's old show on MSNBC with "new elements that we can't wait to unveil." Rosenthal stressed that the show will attract new viewers and fans for Olbermann who will be "tuning into Keith for the first time." Olbermann is equally enthusiastic about having a new venue for his show. After leaving MSNBC in January and signing on with Current TV just a month later, Olbermann said, "Nothing is more vital to my concept of a free media than news produced independently of corporate interference."

Exit Deal Blocks Olbermann from TV
Don’t expect to see Keith Olbermann on another news network in the near future or to watch him pull a Conan on MSNBC: He agreed to stay off television for six to nine months as part of an early exit from the network, and he is also forbidden to discuss his departure. The deal should give him the freedom to be back on TV in time for the 2012 election. “Give us a bit of credit for getting eight years out of him. That’s the longest he’s been anywhere,” one NBC executive tells The New York Times. Olbermann was fired from UPI early in his career for telling his boss they were “minor leagues”; had a stormy brief stint at CNN; called his own departure from ESPN “nuclear war”; and was called “crazy” by Rupert Murdoch, who fired him from Fox Sports.

Keith Olbermann and MSNBC have ended their contract, according to a statement from MSNBC. The last episode of "Countdown" will air this evening, Friday, January 21.
MSNBC's statement reads as follows:
MSNBC and Keith Olbermann have ended their contract. The last broadcast of "Countdown with Keith Olbermann" will be this evening. MSNBC thanks Keith for his integral role in MSNBC's success and we wish him well in his future endeavors.
