The FTC just released its list of
top complaints for 2010, and once again it showed that identify theft topped the list.
[Full state-by-state report (pdf).] Making the list for the first time is "imposter scams" (see Consumer Quickies). These scams often target grandparents, with the scammer calling claiming to be a grandson or granddaughter in desperate need of money to post bail. Other imposter scams include ones where a friend is supposedly stranded in a foreign country, has been robbed, and needs money to get home.
