To be honest I don't think that's any whackier than any other religion, Christian or otherwise.
The constitution says: "no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States." Frankly I believe anyone who argues their candidacy over another's based on their religious beliefs, or based on their opponents' beliefs, ought to be disqualified from public office out of hand.
Oh, I do think its a bit whakier than others - I agree w/you whole heartedly on the separation issue. American's are so quick to embrace it but are such hypocrites as far as living what they claim to embrace. It's kind of fun watching the Republican party implode on itself though. For years they've claimed to be the party of JC - and now that Huckabee's won Iowa - the powers of the Repub party are faced with choosing between JC and corporate money and they don't know quite what to do.
