Senator Diane Feinstein (D-CA), Chair of the Senate Rules Committee, and Senator Robert Bennett (R-UT) have introduced an election reform bill, S.3212, that will make the manufacturers of electronic voting machines very happy. If passed the bill will solidify paperless electronic voting by not requiring a voter verified paper ballot and allow records that only exist in computer memory. The bill also does not clearly require that voters be allowed to verify their vote in any way. And, it empowers the voting machine industry to regulate themselves by putting the voting machine industry on the committee to draft guidelines. Finally, the bill will restrict information about the reliability of voting systems to protect the trade secrets of corporations. Passage of this bill would be a setback for voting integrity in the United States.
Senator Feinstein claims she favors a voter verified paper ballot but is pushing this bill through the Senate claiming it is the best she can do. She needs to be told -- doing nothing is better than doing harm -- and this bill does more harm than good.
