A blackout on Black Friday?

Black Friday, that day of shopping excess, is near. Every year, we awake at an ungodly hour and freeze our buns off in line to buy Christmas gifts we often can't afford for people who don't need them.

What if we all opted out this year? With so many of us struggling with everyday expenses, shouldn't we draw the line on the commercialism of Christmas?

My family has. My parents, brother, sister and I made a pact to not buy each other Christmas gifts anymore. No more DVDs. No more video games. No more shirts for my dad that he puts in the back of his closet in favor of that beat-up plaid, lumberjack-looking thing.

Instead, we're issuing each other IOUs, markers that can be called in later when one of us finds ourselves in need. For example, my younger brother and sister can cash in their chips if they need help with car repairs or tuition. My parents can pool their chips to upgrade their nursing home when the time comes.
