In the event that your home is damaged in a natural disaster, there are measures you can take to keep your family safe, expedite the recovery process and reduce expenses.
Safety — Be aware of any hazards caused by the disaster, such as structural damage, gas leaks, downed power lines and damage to internal wiring. Keep your family in a secure location until the area is deemed safe.
Insurance — Contact your insurance company to schedule an inspection before making any repairs. Remember to take pictures and make note of all damage — even minor — to your house, furniture and other belongings.
Repairs — If you need to repair something to prevent further damage, do so. But remember that some insurance companies may not cover damages if items are repaired or removed before an inspection is conducted. Call your insurance company to be certain.
Equally important to disaster recovery is disaster preparedness. Take a minute to review this disaster checklist to make sure you're ready for the worst.
