The word has always been Man. It only became wo man because of public bathrooms. Where the men go to hang out, (pun intended), and the other place:
wo (whoa) men, (as in don't go in there, too much make-up, hair spray and jabberin' going on in there), not to mention the energy being put out when you mix the moon cycles.
