Dick Winters, the World War II veteran whose service was the inspiration for Band of Brothers died last week at the age of 92. When the commander of Company E, 506th Regiment, 101st Airborne Division was killed on D-Day, Winters became its leader. With 13 men, he destroyed an enemy battery and discovered a detailed map of German defenses on Utah Beach. Later in the war, he led 20 soldiers on a successful attack on 200 German soldiers. Winters published his own memoir in 2006 titled Beyond Band of Brothers.
