Student Forced to Act Out Slave Role

This is not a learning experience. A Connecticut mother has filed a complaint alleging her African-American daughter was forced to play an escaped slave and called the N-word during a reenactment of the Underground Railroad as part of a field trip to Nature’s Classroom. The program’s director, John Santos (who is white), said the exercise involved pretending to pick cotton, be in a slave ship, and be owned by slave masters, but denied condoning use of racial slurs, adding, “Of course it can happen.” Santos further defended the program: "It's a very, very heartfelt understanding of an underclassed group ... a personal reaction to the historical event, bringing it to bear on day-to-day living." Um, no.
