HANDS UP, DON'T SHOOT

Middle and high-school students in Akron, Ohio, are being given a two-sided card, titled “You and the Law,” with suggestions for how to deal with police. The glossy cards, handed out this week, begin by suggesting that students stay out of trouble. During interactions with police, the cards say, students should control their emotions, answer questions about their identity, and put their hands in plain sight. The card also provides numbers to call to report police misconduct. The cards are a collaboration between an anti-violence youth group, Akron PeaceMakers, and the local police department.
